The Celestial Creed I:

Introduction to Islamic Theology

This course serves as an introduction to the study of ‘aqidah through a renowned primer in the field. Using abridged notes on the unanimously accepted work by Imam Abu Ja’far al-Tahawi’s classical text, Bayan I’tiqad Ahl al-Sunnah wa ‘l-Jama’ah (famously known as al-’Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah), students will become acquainted with foundational beliefs within the Islamic paradigm, including: intellectually establishing the existence of a supreme being, tawhid (oneness), the various sifat (attributes) of Allah (SWT), prophethood, and comparative religion. Alongside their theoretical study of theology, students will be taught its application and relevance in the modern context, particularly focusing on combating atheism.

Students will gain a firm and correct understanding of Islamic theology, specifically in regards to Allah Ta’ala’s existence, His essence, and His attributes. Students will also learn to dispel doubts regarding belief

ARB-103 (1.5 Credit Hours)

Introduction to Quranic Arabic

Because the Arabic language is the foundation of all Islamic learning, it is of utmost importance that all Muslims familiarize themselves with it. Through studying Miftah al-Quran by Shaykh Mahfuz al- Rahman Nami, students will acquire the skill set to begin comprehending the Quran. Though the course will not teach a great deal of conversational Arabic, it will be a stepping stone for students to immerse themselves in the vast and eloquent language of the book of Allahï·».

This course is specifically designed to teach students the Arabic required to understand one’s salah (ritual prayer) and simple verses of the Quran. The fall semester will cover 12 lessons from Miftah al- Quran, Insha’ Allah.

Semester Goals:

Students will learn to translate most of their Salah, along with short passages of the Quran.

FQH-103 (2 Credit Hours)

The Fundamentals of Hanafi Fiqh

Over the course of one year, students will study the fundamental aspects of Hanafi fiqh through Madani Academy’s own publications, which have summarized the crucial aspects of well-known texts in the field, such as Mukhtasar al-Quduri, Nur al-Idah, Maraqi al-Sa’adat (Ascent to Felicity), and Ta’leemul Haq. The course will begin with a holistic introduction to the science of fiqh, its historic development, and the monumental impact of early fuqaha on subsequent Islamic scholarship. Thereafter, sessions will provide explanations of rulings in relation to purification, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage, in a manner conducive to the condensed nature of the course. Ultimately, students will develop a basic understanding of Islamic rulings to aid them in perfecting their personal worship and will appreciate the significance of following canonized jurisprudence.

As a supplement to the book, various engaging workshops will be presented by guest scholars throughout the year.

Semester Goals:

Students will learn the foundation and history of fiqh, as well as the importance of early fuqaha (jurists). Students will learn the essential rulings of purification.

TFS-103 (1.5 Credit Hours)

An Introduction to Exegesis

The premier method of nurturing an intimate relationship with the Quran is to dive into the depths of its meanings. As such, students will be taught Quranic exegesis of chapters that are commonly recited, i.e. Surah al-Fatihah and the final ten surahs. Though this course is only an introduction to the vast science of tafsir, students will find themselves connecting to the words of Allahï·» and finding a new sense of attachment to their prayers and worship.

The fall semester aims to deliver a sound and meaningful explanation of the following chapters: Al- Fatiha, al-Nas, al-Falaq, al-Ikhlas, al-Lahab, al-Kawthar. This course is a corequisite of TRTL-103.

Students will improve the quality and substance of their salah by learning the exegesis of six commonly recited chapters of the Quran.

TRTL-103 (1.5 Credit Hours)

With Measured Tone: Perfecting the Last Ten Surahs

This is a mixed – theoretical and practical – course covering the principal rules required in Quranic recitation. The teacher’s expertise will aid students in developing itqan (perfection) in the last ten surahs (chapters). The class will be taught collectively but will also include individualized instruction.

TZK-103 (1.5 Credit Hours)

Traversing the Spiritual Path

Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali’s masterpiece, Bidayat al-Hidayah has long been revered as a handbook for spiritual reformation and self-development. Through studying this work, students will be introduced to the importance of tazkiyah, suluk, and Islamic spirituality, as a means of rejuvenating their worship and connection with Allahﷻ. Alongside the text, students will be taught methods of implementing dhikr into their lives and will learn how to hold themselves accountable for their religious and daily obligations.

Semester Goals:

Students will learn the importance of tazkiyah. Students will be taught impractical implementation of spirituality through dhikr and du’a. Students will keep up to date with accountability charts in order to develop good habits.
